Doors don't just open to the outdoors, or the next room - in the worlds of cinema and television, they can also lead us into other worlds and into the lives of inspiring characters.
We've put together a list of six of the most iconic doors from film and television to inspire your next doorway.
1. Bag End, The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings
An obvious source of inspiration, this door appeared in the tremendously successful 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' franchises. This door symbolises everything that is cosy and appealing about coming home (even if it is a little small for the average-sized person).
We have a range of front doors available in aluminium, timber and fibreglass that are sure to keep those grey-haired wizards out when you'd rather stay at home than go on an adventure.
2. 221B Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes
The iconic doorway into the London home of arguably the most well-known detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes, is easily recognisable. Its style is more formal than the hobbit hole entranceway, and would work well for city homes.
3. The front door, Home Alone
The cat flap in the front door of Kevin McCallister's house provided some hilarious moments. However, as a kid watching this film, you may have been afraid of intruders poking their heads through the hole at night. Ensure your doors are secure against trespassers by using Malta® hardware that increases security with 2-point or 4-point locking.
4. The door to Elysium, Gladiator
In this film, the door to Elysium evokes an incredibly emotional response. It features throughout the film as the gateway to the afterlife, where the protagonist Maximus will be reunited with his wife and child who were horrifically slain by the violent emperor Commodus.
While they're certainly not doors to the afterlife, our range of elegant French doors will make you feel as though you're stepping out into another world.
5. Monica's door, Friends
With its distinctive purple hue and gold frame around the peephole, this door is surely one of the most iconic ones in television. However, we think that these days it would look a tad outdated. Why not check out our selection of modern hinged doors instead?
6. The Door, Game of Thrones
Undoubtedly the most emotional use of a door on the screen recently, this door symbolises the enormous sacrifice made by a man (Hodor) for his friends. Thanks to this episode in season six of Game of Thrones, the phrase 'hold the door' can never be used in the same way ever again, as it makes avid fans of the popular series tear up.
Hodor was trying his best to keep the door closed against the formidable wights lying on the other side, but luckily you don't have any evil foes inside your home. When you want unrestricted access to the outdoors, our bifold patio doors are perfect.
These famous doors have served as backdrops for scene-stealing performances and as portals to other realms. Doors may not be quite as exciting in our daily lives, but they still act as the setting for welcomes and goodbyes with friends and family.
